HISTORY
1998
In 1998, Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University in collaboration with Imperial College London, UK and Mahanakorn University of Technology, offered Master Degree program in Biomedical Engineering, as the first biomedical engineering program in the South East Asia region. The Master Degree program in Biomedical Engineering, Mahidol University, has been actively teaching since then. Prof. Pairoj Suwannasuthi, the Dean of Mahidol Engineering at that moment, was the first director of the Biomedical Engineering Program.
2004
In 2004, a group of faculty members from several departments including Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering Program established a multi-disciplinary research group, called BART LAB. BART LAB was the first serious research group in Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University. The main purpose of BART LAB was to conduct research in biomedical engineering field based on robotics and automation. Several fruitful research and people had been involving in establishing the Department of Biomedical Engineering in later time. In 2005, BART LAB had officially become the "Center for Biomedical and Robotics Technology" (www.bartlab.org) which Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn was the first director of the BART Center.
2005-2006
In 2006, Mahidol University seriously determined to establish Department of Biomedical Engineering, and to offer an undergraduate program for Biomedical Engineering. Faculty of Engineering in collaborations with Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Faculty of Medicine Ramadhibodi Hospital, Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Medical Technology, Faculty of Dentistry and Faculty of Pharmacy, was hosting to develop this multi-disciplinary program, "Bachelor's Degree Program in Biomedical Engineering."Key members to drive the program in this initial stage were Prof. Theeraporn Rubcumintara, Prof. Chatchai Netrpisarnvanich, Prof. Warakorn Charoensuk and Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn.
In the same year, Department of Biomedical Engineering was founded to handle all activity for biomedical engineering academic programs. Prof. Theeraporn Rubcumintara, the Vice Dean for Academics at that moment, became an Acting Department Chair. Department accepted new faculty members, Dr. Panrasee Rittipravat, Dr. Norased Nasongkla and Mr. Pracha Yambangyang.
2007
In 2007, Department of Biomedical Engineering accepts the first class of undergraduate students. In the same year, Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn was appointed as the first Department Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Mahidol University. Prof. Panrasee Rittipravat was establishing the AIM LAB (Artificial Intelligent in Medicine Lab), formerly known as ISM Lab, and Prof. Bavornlak Oonkhanond, our strong adjunct faculty member from Department of Chemical Engineering, was founding the STEN LAB (Scaffold for Tissue Engineering Lab).
2008-2009
In 2008, the department accepted a new faculty member, Dr. Yodchanan Wongsawat. In the same year, Prof. Norased Nasongkla had founded the BioNEDD LAB (Biomedical and Nanoscale Engineering for Drug Delivery and Molecular Imaging Lab). In later time, Prof. Yodchanan Wongsawat founded the BCI LAB (Brain Computer Interface Lab). Prof. Jackrit Suthakorn was officially transferred from Department of Mechanical Engineering to Department of Biomedical Engineering.
2010
In 2010, Department of Biomedical Engineering offers Ph.D. Program in Biomedical Engineering as one of the first Ph.D. Programs offered at the Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University. Prof. Punya Kaimuk, MD, an expert in sport science and orthopedic surgeon, has joined the Department as a full-time faculty member. Besides, Dr. Phornphop Naiyanetr finished his Ph.D. and resumed his faculty position at the department.
In the same year, the national admission score for prospective students to be able to join our undergraduate program was ranked NO.1 in Thailand for all engineering disciplines. Moreover, Dr. Panrasee Ritthipravat had been awarded as the National Inventor by the National Research Council of Thailand. She also had been promoted to be Assistant Professor of Computer Science.
2011
In 2011, Department of Biomedical Engineering accepts new faculty members, Dr. Pornpimol Sritongkham and Asst. Prof. Dr. Borisut Sanmano Hanpanich, M.D. to strengthen the research and academic activities. Dr. Pornpimol has strong research experience in Biosensors for more than 10 years from King’s Mongkut University of Technology Thonburi and National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC), Thailand. Dr. Hanpanich is an medical doctor with expertise in skin and tissue engineering. She was with the Faculty of Medicine, Thammasat University before joining the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Mahidol University.
In this year, our first class of 36 undergraduate students have graduated their Bachelor’s degrees. One third of them continues pursuing Master Degree in Biomedical Engineering at Mahidol University, 5 of them continues pursuing advanced degree aboard which a student receives a Government Scholarship. The rest of them are exploring Medical Industry in Thailand.
2012
In 2012, the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Mahidol University has accepted a new faculty member, Dr. Sanitta Thongpang., has recently finished her Ph.D. study from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA in the field of Neuro-Engineering and BioMEMS. In the same year, Dr. Thongpang has started-up her new research lab, Neuro-Exploration Technology Laboratory (NEXT LAB), located at the 3rd Floor, Engineering Building 3 in Mahidol University, Salaya Campus.
In this year, the Department of Biomedical Engineering has acquired more space of 600 Sq.m., and has been appointed to take care a large Clean Room worth of 10 Million Baht, located in the working shop area in Engineering Building 3. The new space has been assigned to renovate and construct an internal 2-story building to support the quick expansion of research, academics and student activities in the department.
Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, the Department Chair, has been appointed to join a University's large scale project to develop a Center for Elderly Person and Hospice to be construct in the Hauhin, Prachuabkirikan Province, 1.5 hour drive from Bangkok. Dr. Suthakorn is assigned to handle the research for innovation for elderly living and rehabilitation.
Dr. Yodchanan Wongsawat, the Vice Department Chair, has extended his research on Brain-Computer Interface by establishing the Brain Fitness Institute, located at the opposite to the Mahidol University, Salaya Campus. The institute is support the clinical treatment as an alternate medicine to the patients.
