The purpose of this laboratory is for conducting research on bioresource conversion to biofuels, building block chemicals and biobased material. Both chemical and biochemical reactions are performed to convert lignocellulosic and starchy biomass to products. Undergraduate and graduate students have opportunities to learn how to operate the chemical reactor and fermenter. Both laboratory and scaled up reactors equipped with sensor and controller are available at which the students can learn about the instrumentation.<\/p>\n

Analytical assays related to biorefinery such as column chromatography, colorimetric analysis of simple sugar and protein, assays for enzymatic and chemical analysis of various types of bioresources composition are established. Sample preparation such as mixing, liquid extraction, filtration, centrifugation for advanced analytical assays such as LC\/MS, GC\/MS, HPLC, XRD is conducted in this laboratory.<\/p>\n

Current research focuses are the conversion of bioresources to precious chemicals and building block chemicals for bioplastics. The kinetic study of many reactions have been investigated using hydrothermal reactor, liquefied pyrolysis reactor, as well as biochemical reactor. A method for production of bio-crude oil and carbon-rich compounds from liquefaction of biomass is successfully established.<\/p>\n

Apart from that, students are able to learn how to fabricate bio-based materials from starch, dextrins, lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose using different techniques such as biobased film casting and hot-compression molding. Superabsorbent and responsive controllable drug-release hydrogel for medical and modern agricultural purposes have currently been developed.[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n
