Mahidol CardiaTech, a multidisciplinary team from the CardioArt Lab, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University, has made Thailand proud by winning the First Runner-Up prize at the Heart Hackathon 2025. The competition was part of the 31st Annual Meeting of the International Society of Mechanical Circulatory Support (ISMCS 2025), held from 1–4 December 2025 in Vienna, Austria. This is one of the world’s leading platforms for artificial heart technology and advanced medical device innovation.
Mahidol CardiaTech has 43 members: students from the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital; as well as high school students from Mahidol University International Demonstration School (MUIDS); and The Newton Sixth Form School. This collaboration allowed the team to integrate engineering expertise with clinical perspectives, enabling them to design an innovative artificial heart concept.
The team was guided by faculty advisors including Assistant Professor Dr. Phornphop Naiyanetr, a lecturer at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering as main advisor. Also advising were Dr. Goragoch Gesprasert, M.D. and Dr. Paweena Dil, D.V.M. who provided support throughout the entire process, including in-depth engineering design and medical data analysis essential for real-world applications.
This achievement demonstrates the potential of Thai students. It provides motivation to advance research in Total Artificial Heart (TAH) development and medical innovation to improve the quality of life for heart disease patients. It reinforces the position of Mahidol University as a leader in biomedical engineering in Thailand, and internationally.
