Mahidol EcoLab meets with CHAROEN POKPHAND GROUP CO., LTD.

On 10 August 2017, Asst. Prof. Dr. Trakarn Prapaspongsa, head of Mahidol EcoLab (Eco-Efficient Engineering Research Lab along with her research team from International Master Program in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University met with Ms. Jeeranee Janrungauthai – Assistant Director, Sustainability Development and Governance Audit, Sustainability, Good Governance and Corporate Communication Office (SGC) of CHAROEN POKPHAND GROUP CO., LTD. at C.P. Tower 2 Building in order to discuss future research collaborations. The meeting aimed at presenting the overall framework of the two projects. Firstly, “Development and Application of Life Cycle Impact Assessment Method for Supporting Sustainable Food Innopolis and Bioenergy Industry in Thailand” – a sub-project under “Network for Research and Innovation for Trade and Production of Sustainable Food and Bioenergy” project – funded by National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA Research Chair Grant 2016) was presented. Secondly, “Environmental Footprints of Food Supply Chains towards Sustainable Consumption and Circular Economy in the UK and Thailand” – a collaborative project between Mahidol University in Thailand and Liverpool John Moores University in the UK was demonstrated and discussed. In the meeting, various collaboration platforms were proposed such as being users of the future research results, participating in the research as co-researcher/data provider/funding institution, etc.

The “RESET – REliability and Safety Engineering and Technology for large maritime engineering systems” project (with total funding of €1,417,500 from EU) is collaborative research among 9 universities from 7 countries – Liverpool John Moores University (UK), Aalto University (Aalto-Korkeakoulusäätiö; Finland), Instituto Superior Tecnico, Universidade of Lisbon (Portugal), Leibniz University Hannover (Germany), University of Plymouth (UK), Mahidol University (Thailand), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (National University of Malaysia; Malaysia), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (Malaysia), and Wuhan University of Technology (China).

 

The RESET project leader at Mahidol University is Asst. Prof. Dr. Wonsiri Punurai and the team members include Asst. Prof. Dr. Trakarn Prapaspongsa, Asst. Prof.Dr. Yasothorn Sapsathiarn, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Teraphan Ornthammarath from Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. Under this project, there will be short- and long-term visits of professors and researchers from all partner universities in order to carry out research and organize seminars as well as international conferences from 2017 to 2021.

 

In addition, on 20th July 2017, Professor Jin Wang from Liverpool John Moores University, UK, who is the principal coordinator of this program give a special seminar organised by Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University. The topic is ”A Risk-Based Approach in Design and Operation of Large Maritime Engineering Systems under Uncertainties”

 

Staffs from Mahidol University will have more opportunities from this collaboration and also interesting research outcomes from the RESET project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme throughout these four years.

 

Campus Open Houses for Local High School Students

In addition to regular Open House visits in November every year, we offer expanded programming during school break in the summer. On 11 August 2017, around 60 students from Kanjanapisek Wittayalai Nakhon Pathom School, a local high school in Salaya, visited Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Laboratory. Some of our activities including Stress-Strain Test, Shake Table Test, Soil Liquefaction Test, and Environmental Engineering Lab Test. These Open Houses give prospective students and their families a chance to get to know the Mahidol University’s academic community, our campus, and our home in Salaya. Our faculties offered students a hand on experience on science for their future career. Our faculties who led this program were Asst. Prof. Dr. Praveen Chompreda, Asst. Prof. Dr. Teraphan Ornthammarath, and Dr. Nawat Surinkul with Master students as supporting staffs.

Research and Innovation Staff Exchange funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020

During September 24- 26, 2017 Asst. Prof. Dr. Wonsiri Punurai and Asst. Prof. Dr. Yasothorn Sapsathiarn participated in the kick start meeting under the Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) through a project entitled “REliability and Safety Engineering and Technology for large maritime engineering systems (RESET)” funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and International Workshop on Maritime Safety and Smart Shipping (MSSS) at Wuhan University of Technology, Chutian International Hotel, Wuhan, China

Mahidol -EGEW International PhD Program Director Meets Norwegian Ambassador and Minister Counsellor at Norwegian Embassy Yangon

On 22 March 2018, Visiting Prof. Dr. Ranjna Jindal –Program Director of International Ph.D. Program in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University visited the Norwegian Embassy in Yangon, Myanmar to meet the Ambassador and Minister Counsellor.  Purpose of the meeting was to discuss the possibility of launching the CBIM Phase II – Norwegian Scholarships for postgraduate students in Myanmar to study at Mahidol University.  The discussion was very positive leading to the hope for receiving such scholarship grant to Mahidol University near future.  On this occasion, Prof. Ranjna was also accompanied by her two former students from Myanmar – Ms. Shwe Sin Ko Ko and Mr. Thaw Tar Htun, the recipients of CBIM scholarships in 2014.  Both had finished their Masters Studies in International Master Program in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, within 2 years with Prof. Ranjna as their Major Advisor.  They are now working as Environmental Consultants in the E Guard Environmental Services Co. Ltd. in Yangon, Myanmar.

Collaboration between Mahidol and Kyoto Universities

On 28 September 2018, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nopraenue Sajjarax Dhirathiti, Acting Vice President for International Relations and Corporate Communication welcomed the delegation from Kyoto University, Japan, led by Prof. Kaya Inaba, Executive Vice-President for Gender Equality, International Affairs and Public Relations. The purpose of this visit was for the delegation to discuss ongoing and future research collaboration and student exchange between Mahidol University and Kyoto University. The participants in the session include Asst. Prof. Dr.Yodchanan Wongsawat, Vice Dean for Research and International Relations and representatives from Faculty of Engineering.
